The first month of the year had a lot of enthusiasm and hard work from all the swimmers in the Dynamo Swim School and Swim Team. Hard work paid off on the first Mini Meet last Friday for all the swimmers that participated in the competition. Lots of best times and new qualifications for the LMR Championship in Richmond 25-26 February, 2012. Congratulation to all of you.

Also I am very proud of the Masters group improvements , you are a model of work ethic and commitment for Dynamo Swim Team. Congratulations to Elaine M., Brian M.,and Simon P.

Next competition is going to be the Mini Meet at Bonsor pool on the 18th of February, 2012 from 3:30-5:00pm. The standard fees for mini-meets are $5/swimmer which is used to cover the coast of ribbons and prizes. Please register with your coach for the Mini Swim Meet and LMR Championship before 11th of February, 2012.

We are very pleased with the new pool time we got on SATURDAY AT BONSOR POOL 3:30-5:00 PM. It is the WHOLE pool on Saturdays!

Keep-up the good work.

Lidia Menzies, Head Coach

The Regional/Provincial Group were welcomed back after Christmas break. The break was much needed as the swimmers looked fresh early in the first week of training. There was no sign of rustiness so they spent less time in practice easing back to their rhythm. As a result, the group was quickly able to get back to shape, earlier than I expected. For the month, we focused on a mixture of IM and each swimmer’s main stroke. The IM training is for swimmers to be more well-rounded and to focus on their strengths (main stroke) in the medley event. The IM training was also a good way for swimmers to stay away from the monotonous freestyle sets and they responded well and were certainly much more motivated when they were given a variety of strokes to work with during practice. We ended the month with a mini meet and a lot of the swimmers put in really impressive performances as predicted from their rapid progress upon coming back to training.

Ernest Lai, Assistant Coach

Congratulation to Jike Gao for achieving a personal best time in the 200 Individual Medley at the mini meet. It is very important for swimmers to attend the monthly mini meet because it acts as a report card each month to let you know how much you are improving. By writing your times in your log-book, you will be able to refer to it at anytime so that you know if you are improving. I hope to see everyone at the next mini meet.

Michael Lai, Assistant Coach

During the past month, I’ve seen lots of improvement in the I Can Swim group. The swimmers have been swimming full lanes and their endurance has improved.

This month, I worked mostly with Andy and Emma. We are working on swimming with better technique, mainly with kick and 1, 2, 3 breathe. Emma’s kick has gotten much better this month and Andy’s is getting better also, but he’s still working on pointing his toes when he kicks. We have been working on backstroke, focusing mainly on kicking on our back and arms with a kickboard.

Another thing to remember is to swim in a circle (keep to the right) and to not stop in the middle of the lane.

Good work!!

Jennifer C., Assistant Coach

COACHES CORNER

We would like to welcome all the new Dynamo members. We are doing our best to make you feel you belong to a great swimming club and are helping you achieve all your goals in swimming.

DYNAMO SWIM SCHOOL is a very successful program and is growing fast. All the swimmer from I Can Swim and I Can Swim Fast have improved a lot in their swimming skills and they are moving up to the next level in the swim club programs. Congratulations to Mitra Suseendran, Nathan Lai, Brian Chen, Helena Zhou for moving up in the Regional Group.

The most improved swimmers for November in the I Can Swim Group are: Sara Patterson at CG Brown pool Yiu Cailen at Bonsor pool. For I Can Swim Fast group the most improved swimmer is Page Dickie. For the Regional group the SOM (swimmers of the month) for girls; Mara Mijatovic and for boys: Kyle Nguyen. For Provincial group the SOM are Erin Patterson, Jike Gao and Alex Vranjes. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU! Dynamo Swim Team had a good show at the Delta Invitational Swim Meet in Richmond last week-end (the 27th of November). All 14 swimmers did their best collecting best times and ribbons. Best results are: Jike Gao, 12, won the 50m Free and 200m breast, Aleksandar Vranjes, 14, won the 50m Breast and 200m Free. The next competition is going to be on 23rd of December 5-7pm at Bonsor pool, you need to swim a legal stroke and do legal start and turn. There is time to practice and learn all this skills for a chance to win medals and lots of prizes at the swim meet.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Lidia Menzies, Director of Swimming

COACHES REPORT

Hi everyone,

Good work to everyone this past month. I have seen many improvements from swimmers at both Bonsor and CG Brown. With I Can Swim Fast, I have begun introducing breaststroke kick and dolphin kick as well as flip turns on their front and back. In the Regional Group, we have worked on a lot of IM and flip turns as well for the past month. Turns are expected all the time and will only get better with practice. I would like to welcome Kyle to our group. He is doing very well and has attended his first ever swim meet last Sunday. Please congratulate him when you see him at the pool.

As usual I must stress the importance of bringing water bottles and log books to practice. My groups are beginning to do a lot of timed swims and it would be beneficial if everyone has a logbook to keep track of their improvements.

Thanks and see you all at the pool.

Vivian Cai, Assistant Coach

This month the I Can Swim group worked on their kicking some more and started doing freestyle and backstroke without kick boards. Connor and Cailen are doing great without the kick boards and they can swim full lanes now. Adrian is improving quickly and can also swim full lanes. Emma’s 1, 2, 3, breathe has improved a lot but still needs to try not stopping in the middle of the lane. Andy’s endurance has been improving a lot throughout this month, he needs to work on keeping his legs straight when he does freestyle kick. Everyone needs to remember to try to keep kicking fast.

Keep up the good work!

Jennifer Cai, Assistant Coach

Regional and Provincial Group

The swimmers had a good block of training done during the month of November. The group is really focused and have been working hard towards fulfilling the goals they set for themselves. The swimmers are settled in now after training consistently for the past two and a half months. Dry land is getting harder and more challenging with heavier volume in training as fatigue is noticeable during dry land after practice in the water. I noticed some swimmers not bringing their water bottles to practice and it seems that swimmers that bring their water bottles today do not get enough water into their bodies during practice in contrast to swimmers back in my day. Staying hydrated during practice is really important to provide balance and consistency during the workout. It is absolutely important for swimmers to have a steady water supply available to them during the workouts in water and dry land as well so make sure to bring your water bottles to practice swimmers! You’re bringing the water bottles for yourself to maintain your performances during practice.

Many of the swimmers are heading to the Delta LMR competition. Many of the swimmers had swam in competitions before so the competition will be nothing new to them. I expect the experiences they gain from prior competitions to benefit them in this competition. There are many experiences to be learned from each competition and the goal for each swimmer was to swim a personal best time in each of their events and reflect on their performances, good or bad, and how they can continue to improve the next time they step up onto the block. I extend my best wishes to those swimmers competing at the meet.

Ernest Lai, Assistant Coach

COACHES REPORT

Regional & Provincial Groups

Mid-September is the start of a new season. It is always tough for swimmers to be back in the water at this time after taking a month off training. The signs of rustiness and sloppiness were present in the first few practices. For these last two weeks the Provincial Group has been focussing on aerobic training and getting back to shape. These practices in particular are always going to be tough. Last season, swimmers lacked the fitness to maintain high performance and consistency throughout main sets. The goal for the month was to produce intensity in aerobic training, followed by a much tougher dry land regime. It was never going to be easy, but the swimmers responded very well; particularly to the dry land workouts. The power and strength is still there, but fitness will be key for the swimmers to get back into shape and perform at a high level on a consistent basis.

This month we welcome two new swimmers, Mara and Maria, to our Regional Group.

Jake: Jake had a couple of good workouts getting back into the water. He has been working very hard to get his fitness levels up. Jake is more disciplined with his approach and had a few fantastic workouts. He is able to negative split and finish fast when asked to do so. Jake has gotten stronger physically, responding well to the group’s new dry land and strength conditioning regime.

Marshia: Marshia had a good month back to swimming. She has been doing very well in the water and keeping up with Jake during practices. Huge improvements have been made from last season. We worked on correcting the backstroke and the breast stroke. So far it has been a work in progress as Marshia only came for a few workouts during the first two weeks. Marshia works really hard during practices, which shows as I see signs of fatigue from her during dry land after practices.

Erin: After a month long break, Erin looks refreshed and ready to go for the new season. We already had a difficult practice second day back into practice. Even though her speed and endurance were not top notch, Erin worked very hard to put in a big effort to swim hard and get through the practice. At this stage, the times are not a priority. Putting in strong practices and working hard to get the fitness levels back up was her focus during the first few weeks. She responded very well with her strong work ethic.

Mara: Mara is one of the new swimmers introduced to our group. For a young swimmer, she excels in one of the most difficult strokes, the breast stroke. I was really impressed with what I saw and I hope to work more on correcting the techniques on the breast stroke, pull and kick. We have been working on getting the underwater pullouts correctly and doing them on a consistent basis. Mara has responded well to these challenges. She also impressed me during dry land. She is able to keep up very well despite her young age.

Maria: Maria is our other new swimmer introduced to the group. Maria is a strong competitor; always wanting to get in front and pass the swimmers in front of her. She has strong determination and motivation to swim fast all the time. Maria shows quick recovery between sets; always eager to get ahead and start the next set. Her passion and energy helps lift the group up during difficult practices.

Helena: Helena did well in the water after coming back from a month and a half break. We worked on getting the breast stroke underwater, pullout, and also butterfly. Helena is a little shy and timid, but needs to show more belief in herself, as she is really good a swimmer. Helena has great work ethic and once she corrects her stroke, she will see vast improvements.

Mitra: Mitra has been really great in the water for the past two weeks. Our goal this year is to improve her techniques on all four strokes and to get to up to the same level as Provincial Groups. Also we are trying to aim for AA or AAA time standards for competitions.

Zoe: Zoe did well in the water after a month long break from swimming. This year we are trying to further improve her techniques in both diving and turns as she requires more practice in those area. Also, we are trying to get her back up to the level of Provincials so that we can have a girl’s relay team in all types of competitions. I am sure she will achieve AA or AAA time standard if she keeps up the good work.

Ernest Lai & Michael Lai, Assistant Coaches

I Can Swim and I Can Swim Fast Groups

Sara: Sara’s freestyle has improved greatly. She can now swim longer distances without having to stop. She is also learning how to breathe to the side in freestyle and she’s doing a great job!

Crystal: Crystal’s freestyle has improved and her technique is much better. She is also improving her freestyle flip turns. She has improved very much from the beginning!

Hannah: Hannah’s freestyle technique has improved, but we will be working on how to do flip turns and breathe on the side, by turning on the back. She’s doing a great job!

Nathan: Nathan’s freestyle and turns are better. He has to remember to count when doing the backstroke turn. Otherwise good job!

Eric: Eric has nice turns and freestyle. His backstroke turns are very good. He has to remember to count his lanes when he swims. Keep up the good work!

Sean: Sean’s better at freestyle and backstroke. Also freestyle turns. He has to remember to lift his tummy while swimming backstroke and kick faster. He also has to pay attention to the feedback from the coaches and work on his technique. Good job!

Connor and Calin: These two have really improved their endurance. They have also learned proper breathing patterns for 1,2,3 breathe with a kickboard.

Aiden: Aiden is a fast swimmer for his age and learns quickly. He does well to keep up with the older kids.

Adrian, Hanna and Marko: The three have just began swimming with the club. I’ve been focusing on improving their kicking endurance, lung capacity, and speed with a lot of kicking races and games. This helps them stay focused and involved.

Alicia Tachaicun & Marybel Menzies, Assistant Coaches

COACHES REPORT

I CAN SWIM GROUP

Sara has been improving a lot lately, her backstroke kick looks great. She needs to work on keeping her head back and up and looking around, but other than that she’s doing great.

Matthew has been improving on his freestyle stroke and has been having a very good attitude and energy during practices. Although he needs to work on keeping his legs straighter, he’s making great progress.

Dani Dal Cengio, Assistant Coach

Currently I am working mostly with the I Can Swim Fast group, and occasionally with the I Can Swim group. I usually coach Sara, James, Liam and Ann. Ann is the fastest in the group and I believe she should be moved into I Can Swim Fast, along with James. Liam listens well to instructions and can keep up with the older kids.
Sara has improved a lot, and can keep up with James. We are working on Sara’s freestyle, helping her to breathe on her side.

At Central Park, my coaching varies from Masters to I Can Swim. I’ve coached Trish, in Masters, who has greatly improved her endurance.

At CG Brown, I coach my I Can Swim Fast group. It consists of Nicolas, Nathan, Jody, Abbi, and Victor. Victor is the fastest in the group and will soon be ready to move to the regional level. For both Nathan and Abbi I am working on their 1, 2, 3 breathe with the kickboard, helping them pull the water and breathe on their side. Nicolas is able to swim freestyle well, and we are working on his kick. Jody has a great backstroke, I am currently trying to improve her kicking endurance.

I CAN SWIM FAST GROUP

Connor & Calen were the newest additions to the swim club. They absolutely enjoy swimming and show a fantastic attitude towards their learning during lessons. Connor and Calen recently had their first mini meet and they did a wonderful job on their first try and showed great determination to finish their events.

Sara showed a lot of improvement in the month of May. She is more enthusiastic in the water and willing to swim extra distances when asked to. A bright spot for Sara was that she spent less time in the warm pool, allowing her to practice more in the main pool. This showed as Sara had a strong swim at the end of month mini meet. Good job Sara!

James is one of our newer swimmers in the club. He brings energy to the group, helping other swimmers settle in during practices. James enjoys being a leader and is always the first one to volunteer during demonstrations. His excitement rubs onto other swimmers, particularly Sara, allowing us to have fun and be productive during lessons.

Liam also joined the swim club along with James. At his age, Liam shows incredible composure in the water. Although Liam is still learning, he is capable of floating alone, but once he learns the basics and technical aspects of swimming, he will be more than capable of swimming without assistance. Keep up the good work!

Nicholas had a good month in the water, as we worked to push his endurance to a higher level. It was always going to be difficult in the beginning, but Nicholas was willing to work hard to improve his endurance. Nicholas never shies away from my challenges and willingly pushes himself to work hard. Although the fatigue may not be the best feeling in the world, it proved to be beneficial for Nicholas as he had an awesome mini meet. Keep up the good work!

REGIONAL/PROVINCIAL GROUP

Good job and effort to everyone who participated in the Dynamo swim meet! I like how everyone was dressed up in Dynamo gear and thanks to all the parents and volunteers who stayed both days to cheer on the team. I want to specifically congratulate Hailey Yap and Helena Zhou for attending the swim meet and doing such an awesome job. The girls have only joined the club for a short time and successfully attended a swim competition with new best times! Just a reminder for those swimming in July and the first week of August; we will be doing dryland on pavement and grass at Central Park so please bring running shoes! See you at the pool.

COACHES REPORT

I CAN SWIM GROUP

Sara has made progress with her freestyle technique, she is learning how to bend her arms properly above water as opposed to keeping them straight. She needs to work on kicking more. Other than that she’s doing great!

Matthew has made great progress with his breathing, putting his head under water, and opening his eyes under water. He needs to work on keeping his arms straight when using a kick board. He is making great progress.

Dani Dal Cengio
Assistant Coach

Last month I spent the most time coaching Victor and Jagoda. They both have improved a lot and are about to do continuous sets without stopping. Both kids are very competitive and it is more productive when they are working together. Jagoda is very motivated and has improved her endurance level. Victor is enthusiastic and he has improved his freestyle breathing pattern. They’re also both beginning to learn butterfly and breaststroke.

I CAN SWIM FAST/ SWIMMING IS A SKILL FOR LIFE

Connor & Calen: The two brothers were the newest additions to the swim club. They absolutely enjoy swimming and show a fantastic attitude towards their learning during lessons. Connor and Calen recently had their first mini meet and they did a wonderful job on their first try and showed great determination to finish their events.

Although Liam is still learning, he is capable of floating alone, but once he learns the basics and technical aspects of swimming, he will be more than capable of swimming without assistance. Keep up the good work!

Ashley and Alyssa have not attended many practices this month, but they looked good in the water during the practices that they went to. The sisters are a pleasure to teach as they’re willing to listen to my instructions and feedback, which showed as they showed improvement for the past two months.

Nicholas had a good month in the water, as we worked to push his endurance to a higher level. It was always going to be difficult in the beginning, but Nicholas was willing to work hard to improve his endurance. Nicholas never shies away from my challenges and willingly pushes himself to work hard.
REGIONAL/PROVINCIAL GROUP

Hi swimmers and parents,

The summer season is approaching so there are a few things to keep in mind. It isn’t very warm yet so it is important to bring extra towels and clothing so the swimmers don’t catch colds. Also remember to bring running shoes to practice because we will be doing dry land outside which will involve running. When it is sunny (which will hopefully be soon), remember to keep a bottle of sunscreen in your swimming bags to refrain from being sun burned. As usual water bottles and log books are a must bring item to practice. I’ve seen many great improvements this last month, especially from our new swimmers in the Regional group such as Hayley, Emily, Caleb, Dylan, and Jamie. Hope to see you come out to more practices!

Vivian Cai, Assistant Coach

Hello everyone!

There is a swim meet coming up on June 11-12 at Bonsor pool and our club is the host. If you are interested in swimming in this competition, please talk to your coach or you can come and talk to me. We are going to enter all the swimmers in the Provincial group in this competition. Last practice I notice lots of improvement on your Breaststroke technique and good times in your IM swim.

Summer is quickly rolling in and I still see that many swimmers are not bringing in water bottles to keep themselves hydrated during practice. It is very important to keep yourself hydrated during summer or else it is very easy to have cramps during practice. In just 2 more weeks we will be having our annual Dynamo Swim Meet!!! I would like to see swimmers try their hardest in practice to be prepared for this competition as there will be prelims and finals. The meet will be on June 11 and 12. I wish you all the best of luck!

Hello everyone!

There is a Swim meet coming up on Feb 26-27, if you are interested in swimming in this competition, please talk to your coach or Lidia for information on the qualification required or you can come and talk to me on Sunday as I am only available at the pool on Sundays for now. Last practice I notice lots of improvement on your Breaststroke technique and good times in your IM swim. Congratulation to Erin and Alex for qualifying for the LMR Championship in Delta. Keep-up the good work.

I CAN SWIM FAST GROUP

Crystal is very enthusiastic and energetic. She has become faster on her freestyle kick and swim, but has a small problem with her arms by not bending her elbows enough. She also tends to lift her head up to breathe and breathes for a very long time by rolling onto her back. She is doing great but tends to fool around quite a bit and is late for every practice. Victor comes on time each practice and is also enthusiastic. We have started to work more with fins now and Victor really enjoys this. He has also become faster but needs to improve his freestyle pull because he doesn’t bend his elbows enough and tends to roll over on his back to breathe. Sara has improved in freestyle kick as well. We have been doing lots of freestyle kick lately and I noticed that she bends her legs too much and moves her legs slowly in the water instead of kicking constantly and fast. When she has lots of energy she kicks fast, but when she starts to get tired she has a tendency to complain. We have also started swimming freestyle swim without the board and she is progressing well. Jesse is attentive during practice, although I noticed that he can get easily distracted by teammates. He is becoming a faster freestyle swimmer but needs to improve his freestyle pull, because his arms are too straight, and when he pulls his kick becomes weaker, which is something that we will work on.
